Complete Guide to Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR)
Understanding your body fat distribution and health risk assessment
What is Waist-to-Hip Ratio?
Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is a simple measurement that compares your waist circumference to your hip circumference. It's an important indicator of body fat distribution and overall health risk.
Research shows that where you carry fat matters more than how much fat you have. Fat stored around the waist (visceral fat) is more dangerous than fat stored around the hips and thighs.
How to Measure Your WHR
Step 1: Waist Measurement
Measure around your waist at the narrowest point, usually at the level of your belly button. Keep the tape measure snug but not tight, and breathe normally.
Step 2: Hip Measurement
Measure around the widest part of your hips and buttocks. The tape should be parallel to the floor and snug but not tight.
Understanding Your Results
Low Risk
Women: WHR ≤ 0.80
Men: WHR ≤ 0.95
Moderate Risk
Women: WHR 0.81 – 0.85
Men: WHR 0.96 – 0.99
High Risk
Women: WHR ≥ 0.86
Men: WHR ≥ 1.00
