38B Sister Size Adjustments: When to Go Up or Down in Band

Understanding sister sizing for 38B opens up more options when a particular bra is out of stock or does not fit quite right. The direct sister sizes for 38B are 36C (sister down: tighter band, larger cup) and 40A (sister up: looser band, smaller cup). Each serves a different purpose depending on your needs.

Go with 36C when you want more support and the 38 band feels slightly loose even on the tightest hook. The 36 band will be firmer, providing better weight distribution, while the C cup maintains the same volume as the B. Use a band extender if the 36 feels too tight at first -- this gives you a middle ground between 36 and 38. Go with 40A only if you are between sizes or if the 38 band feels restrictive and you prioritize comfort over maximum support, keeping in mind that a looser band puts more strain on the straps.

As a rule of thumb, stick with the band size that matches your snug underbust measurement and use sister sizes only as a backup option for specific bras that run unusually tight or loose.

38B: Big Band, Small Cup — Understanding the Proportions

A 38B means a 38" underbust with just 2" difference to bust (40"), creating a wide but shallow shape. This is genuinely a smaller cup volume relative to frame size. But many women wearing 38B should actually be in 34DD or 36D — they have been sized up in band and down in cup.

The reason is simple: stores that do not carry above DD cup push customers into higher bands to find a cup that "fits." The result is a band that provides zero support. The bra's support comes from the band, not the straps, and a band that is 4-6 inches too large cannot do its job.

Check for yourself: if your snug underbust measures under 34 inches, you are probably not a true 38B. Use our calculator to confirm — you may be shocked at what size the numbers actually recommend.

38B vs 36C: The Surprising Volume Truth

These are sister sizes — they hold the same cup volume — but they fit very differently. 36C uses a tighter band for more support and suits a roughly 35-36 inch underbust. 38B uses a wider band for more comfort and suits a roughly 37-38 inch underbust. The volume is identical, but the fit experience is completely different.

Quick self-test: put on your bra and lift your arms overhead. If the band rides up, it is too large — size down in the band. If the underwires dig into your ribs, the cup may be too small or the wires too narrow for your breast root.

For true 38B bodies, wireless bras and bralettes often provide enough support since the cup volume is modest. Brands like Soma, Bare Necessities, and Aerie offer comfortable wireless options that work well at this size.
