Bra Fitting Guide for Trans Women

Finding the right bra as a trans woman can be challenging. This guide addresses unique fitting considerations and helps you find comfortable, supportive bras.

Calculate Your Size

Measure snugly around your ribcage, just under where breast tissue begins

Measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping tape parallel to the floor

Fitting Considerations for Trans Women

Broader Ribcage

Trans women typically have wider ribcages. This means you may need a larger band size relative to cup size than traditional calculators suggest.

Tip: Don't add 4" to your underbust measurement - use your actual measurement rounded to the nearest even number.

Wide-Set Breasts

Trans breasts tend to be positioned further apart on the chest, with more space between them.

Tip: Look for bras with a wider center gore (the part between the cups) or plunge styles.

Different Projection

Trans breasts often have less forward projection and a more conical or tubular shape, especially in earlier stages of HRT.

Tip: Shallow cup bras, bralettes, or sports bras often provide a better fit than push-up styles.

Ongoing Changes

Breast development on HRT continues for 2-5 years, with the most changes in the first 2 years.

Tip: Don't invest heavily in expensive bras early on - your size will change.

Recommended Bra Styles

Bralettes

Flexible sizing, comfortable for various breast shapes, no underwire pressure

Great for early transition or everyday comfort

Sports Bras

Supportive, accommodating for different shapes, comfortable compression

Daily wear, especially during early transition

Plunge Bras

Lower center gore works well for wide-set breasts

When you want more shape under clothes

Minimizer Bras

Distribute tissue across a wider area, work with shallow projection

For a smoother silhouette under clothes

Front-Close Bras

Easier to put on, often have wider-set cups

If you find back-close bras frustrating
