The ABTF 5-Measurement Method
Our calculator uses the ABTF (A Bra That Fits) measurement method, developed and validated by the r/ABraThatFits community on Reddit. This method uses five measurements instead of the traditional two, producing more accurate results than standard retail calculators.
The five measurements are:
- Snug Underbust: Measured around the ribcage with the tape held firmly but comfortably.
- Tight Underbust: Measured around the ribcage with the tape pulled as tight as possible (exhale fully).
- Standing Bust: Measured around the fullest part of the bust while standing upright.
- Leaning Bust: Measured around the fullest part of the bust while leaning forward at 90 degrees.
- Lying Bust: Measured around the fullest part of the bust while lying flat on the back.
The two underbust measurements help determine tissue compressibility and the most appropriate band size. The three bust measurements account for breast tissue distribution and projection, which a single standing measurement cannot capture. We do not collect the loose underbust measurement, as it is primarily used as a comfort reference and does not materially change the calculated band range.
Band Size Calculation
The band size is primarily derived from the snug underbust measurement, rounded to the nearest even number. The tight underbust is used to assess confidence:
- If snug and tight are within 1.5 inches → high confidence in the band size
- If they differ by 1.5–2.5 inches → try two adjacent band sizes
- If they differ by more than 2.5 inches → try three band sizes or seek professional fitting
We do not use the outdated "+4 inch" method (adding 4 inches to the underbust), which was designed for non-stretch fabrics and produces bands that are too loose for modern bras. The band provides approximately 80% of bra support — a too-loose band shifts the weight to the straps, causing shoulder pain and poor lift.
Cup Size Calculation
Cup size is determined by the difference between the bust and band measurements. The calculator uses the average of the three bust measurements for a more stable result:
Average Bust = (Standing + Leaning + Lying) / 3
Cup Difference = Average Bust − Snug Underbust
Each inch of difference ≈ 1 cup size:
1" = A, 2" = B, 3" = C, 4" = D,
5" = DD/E, 6" = DDD/F, 7" = G, 8" = HNote that cup letter progression differs between US and UK systems above D cup. The calculator handles this conversion automatically (see International Conversion below).
International Size Conversion
Bra sizing systems vary by country. Our conversion tables are derived from:
- Manufacturer-published size charts from 20+ brands
- Community-validated conversion data from r/ABraThatFits
- International sizing standards (EN 13402-3 for European markets)

Known Limitations
Important: Our calculator provides a starting size range, not a definitive size. No calculator can account for all factors that affect bra fit. The result should always be verified by trying on bras and performing a fit check.
- Breast shape: Two people with identical measurements may need different cup styles (e.g., projected vs. shallow) due to breast root width and tissue distribution.
- Brand variation: Brands engineer bras with different wire widths, cup depths, and band elasticities. A 34C from Brand A may fit differently than a 34C from Brand B.
- Measurement error: Self-measurement is inherently less precise than professional measurement. Taking measurements 2–3 times and averaging improves accuracy.
- Body changes: Weight fluctuations, hormonal cycles, pregnancy, and aging all affect bra size. Re-measure every 3–6 months.
- Tissue compressibility: The calculator uses snug and tight underbust to estimate compressibility, but individual tissue density varies widely.
- Asymmetry: Most women have some degree of breast asymmetry. The calculator outputs a single size — always fit to the larger breast.
